Movement I    is in Sonata Allegro form. Theme 1 is a six measure canon in E minor. The melody is repeated, followed by the clarinet leading into theme 2, a lyrical melody for flute in the key of G major. The exposition comes to a cadence in G major, as the dynamic level diminishes. The movement intensifies in the development section, with fragments of the opening themes used in the keys of A minor and C major. A ritard in the clarinet leads to the recapitulation. The two themes repeat in the tonic key, followed by a short coda, ending abruptly in a burst of ascending unison sixteenth notes. (4:13)

Movement II    is a fantasy based on a short opening theme in the flute, shifting from D major to D minor. The clarinet and the piano provide mostly harmonic support. The use of mixed meter adds to the unrest and the searching nature of the themes. The dynamic level increases with the use of fourth chords in the piano, culminating in a dominant chord leading back to the original theme. (2:21)

Movement III    begins with a pentatonic melody in a triple meter, accompanied by a piano part in a duple meter. The dorian mode gives way to a circle of fifths leading to a semi-cadence. Theme 2 is in the key of A minor, using the natural minor scale. Unlike the imitation employed between the flute and clarinet in theme 1, the clarinet accompanies the flute with ascending and descending chromatic lines. The piano accompaniment is syncopated, with a galloping triplet figure ending many of the measures. The two themes are developed in closely related keys, with the sonata coming to a close as the instruments fade out on theme 1. (3:53)
